2 Day Inca Trail to Machupicchu

This trip is  terrific option for those who want to experience the beauty and wonder of  arriving at Machupicchu after only 1 day of walking. It is ideal for those  who do not have much time or have physical limitations. On this trek we will  find many archaeological sites, cloud forests, waterfalls, an abundant  variety of fauna and flora and many species of birds. The walk is approximately  6-7 hours upon which we will arrive at the Inti Punku (Sun Gate) and have our  first inspiring view of Machupicchu, the hidden capital of the Incas, and  enjoy the beautiful vistas of the Vilcanota mountain range.

Day 1: Cusco (3,350m) - Ollantaytambo (2,792m) - Km 104 (2,200m) - Wiñay Wayna (2,700m) -Machupicchu (2,500m)
For this trek there are no porters, you are in charge of carrying your own belongings with you on the trek to Aguas Calientes.  We recommend you leave your large luggage in your hotel in storage and have a small backpack wherein you put only what you need for tonight and the next day.  You cannot send luggage forward to Aguas Calientes on the trains.

Early morning transfer from your hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley to the train station in Ollantaytambo. If you are staying in Ollantaytambo it’s a short walk to the train station.  We take the train to Km104, where your guide will be waiting for your arrival. We cross over the Vilcanota River via a beautiful bridge and arrive at Chachabamba. This is the first Inca ruin on our trek. Upon leaving Chachabamba the path ascends into a forest and much needed shade. We reach a magnificent waterfall and shortly afterwards arrive at the beautiful Inca construction of Wiñay Wayna (‘Forever Young’).

We have a box lunch close to a small hostel, and after taking a short break our journey continues to Inti Punku (‘the Sun Gate’) from where we have our first impressive view of Machupicchu.  After taking in the view we take the bus to the town of Aguas Calientes where we spend the night. We have dinner together in a local restaurant. Perhaps take a dip in the hot springs this evening!

Day 2: Aguas Calientes (2,000m) - Machupicchu - AguasCalientes – Ollantaytambo - Cusco
Another early breakfast today! At the agreed time with your Private Guide he will collect you from the hotel and together you take the bus up to Machupicchu!  You will have a guided tour lasting around 2 hours on the amazing architecture and mysterious temples.  Your guide will explain all about the sophisticated ideas of this highly advanced culture that once inhabited the citadel. Once we have completed the official tour, you will have some free time to explore the sanctuary on your own.

HUAYNAPICCHU & MACHUPICCHU MOUNTAINS
Permits are required for either of these hikes – you must book in advance!

ENTRANCE TIMES
There are various entrance times into Machupicchu starting from 6-7am on the hour, every hour with the last slot being 4-5pm.  There are limited amounts of entrance tickets for each entrance slot. We check and select the best entrance time in accordance with your program.  Each entrance slot allows 2500 persons in at a time.

Huaynapicchu: Currently the more popular hike as it’s a little shorter.  This hike is around 1hr steep ascent – there are sheer drops on the side, so if you are afraid of heights, this is not for you!  Coming down will also be around 1hr approx.

There are 400 permits available per day and split into the following departure times:
• 7am-8am slot (you will need to be up in Machupicchu for opening so that you can have your tour first followed by the hike)
• 10-11am slot (this is our preferred time slot for our passengers as it means you can have your tour of Machupicchu first followed by the hike).

Machupicchu Mountain:  Less known than Huaynapicchu but certainly not to be ignored.  This hike is slightly longer taking around 1.5hrs up and same down.  From the top you will also get a birds eye view of Machupicchu. Many of our guides prefer this hike as its less crowded.

There are 400 permits available and there is one entrance time slot:
• 7-8am (you will need to be up in Machupicchu for opening so that you can have your tour first followed by the hike)
• 9-10am (this is our preferred time slot for our passengers as it means you can have your tour of Machupicchu first followed by the hike)

The cost to add on either excursion is US$ 82 per person payable in advance.  Please note your permits are with your name and passport details and are non- transferable and non-refundable.
